The NEWPORT NEWS left the yard January 9, 1952, to serve as Fleet Flagship for Admiral Gardner in the Mediterranean Sea, returning to Norfolk, Va., on May 8, 1952. During the period May 8, 1952, to September 17, 1952, the NEWPORT NEWS was in the yard when Captain William Cooper was relieved as Commanding Officer by Captain Walter Price on June 27, 1953.
On September 17, 1952, the NEWPORT NEWS left for a seven-week refresher training cruise at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, returning November 8, 1952, for a two month yard period in which the cruiser stayed in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until January 7, 1953.
