On January 7, 1953 NEWPORT NEWS departed for the Mediterranean Sea. Arriving at Algiers, January 16, 1953, the NEWPORT NEWS relieved the USS COLUMBUS as Flagship for Vice Admiral J.H. Cassady, Commander Sixth Fleet. The ship returned to Norfolk, Va. on June 2, 1953.
During the time the ship was in Norfolk a change of command ceremony took place with Captain E.K. Van Swearingen, relieving Captain W.H. Price. On August 27, 1953, the heavy cruiser departed for a three-week training cruise to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba returning to Norfolk, Va. September 26, 1953
