On January 4, 1954, the ship steamed east for a tour of duty in the Mediterranean as flagship of Commander Sixth Fleet.
VADM J.H. Cassady was relieved aboard the NEWPORT NEWS by VADM T.S. Combs the 8th of March. The ship returned to the States 29 May.
June 4, 1954, Captain Royce P. Davis relieved Captain Van Swearingen as CO of NEWPORT NEWS. For 45 days beginning 10 August the ship was in drydock and remained in the shipyard an additional two weeks receiving the Navy's latest fire control equipment and radar. The 10th of October began six weeks of refresher training at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. During this period the other principal islands of the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Haiti) were also visited.
