NEWPORT NEWS participated in "Operation Springboard" for two weeks beginning 4 January, 1955, and this took her again to Cuban operating areas. For the period of February 19, to May 18, 1955, the ship was in the Mediterr​anean as flagship of VADM R.A. Ofstie.
During this tour of duty visits were made to ports in Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Turkey and Portugal.
Upon returning to the US, the NEWPORT NEWS again visited New York City on the 4th of July weekend.
From the period July 18 to August 26 she took part in Midshipman Cruise "Charlie", designed for midshipman training and made visits to Panama, Havana, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
On 30 August 1955, Commander Cruiser Division TWO, RADM E.R. McLean, shifted his flag from the light cruiser USS Roanoke to the NEWPORT NEWS. From 26 September until 7 October the ship participated in operations off the Atlantic coast with a weekend visit to Jacksonville, Florida.
At Norfolk on 10 October Captain David L. Whelchel relieved Captain Davis as Commanding Officer. A brief yard period followed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Va. where mount 31 was removed because of damage sustained due to rough seas.
