Important: I need to know how many are planning to attend as well as how many are planning to berth aboard the Salem so I can
get everything organized. I can also answer any questions you may have about the work party.
Please contact me (the sooner the better) by email at: ca148@charter.net
Beginning Wednesday June 6th, through and including Saturday June 9th, 2012, there will be a reunion and workparty on board the USS Salem in
Quincy, Mass.
Come for any days between June 6th and June 9th that work for you - all, one, or something in between. Invite your family members and friends -
all are welcome. If you stay
in contact with any other Newport News sailors, be sure to let them know about this work party.
We will have a number of events over the four days, in addition to doing necessary work to spruce up our museum, Turret 2, and some of
the mounts and other spaces. If health problems preclude you from the more strenuous work - no problem. Your encouragement,
jokes and sea stories will make up for it.
The Memorial Service will be held Friday morning. Uniforms may be worn at that event. Many of us have tropical whites, but blues and khakis
are also fine. If you don't have those, no problem, your NN gear or civies will work as well.
As in the past, racks will be available on board the ship at no charge and we have expanded the number of racks for our use.. many thanks to
Bob Freeman for all his hard work to get more berthing spaces freed up. If you plan on staying on board, you will need to bring your own
bedding and toiletries. The Salem a museum ship - not a hotel. :)
We will also arrange for a good rate at a local hotel for those of you that have had enough of racks.
Thanks to Bob and other shipmates, we now have our own galley, and can cook up some pretty amazing breakfasts for the crew. A few other meals
will be provided as well. We have to be aware of costs, so certain lunches and dinners will be on your own, but there are number of establishments
in the area where the prices are very reasonable.
All supplies - paint, Brasso, rags, brushes, brooms, etc., will be provided. All you need to do is bring dungarees or work clothes since you will
probably get dirty.
Please check back here for further details as they become available.
Hope to see all of you there - our ranks are thinning, but we are still getting the job done. We are, and always will be, Thunder Sailors.
All the best to you and yours,
Al Siegel ETR2 - OE Div 67-70
