I arrived aboard as a Firemen Apprentice and was told that the Engineering Dpt. was full so I had choice between Deck gang or Gun gang. The ship was in the shipyard and I was working in Mt.53 and I saw guys covered in soot with pales of bricks walking by and asked the Mt. Captain what they were doing and when I found out that they were haling boiler bricks I asked how I could become a Seamen Apprentice he told me to fill out a chit. I made 2nd. Class some time in 1972 and became responsible for maintenance of Mts. 51, 52, & 53 and not long after that Gunner Smith asked me if I would like to become Turret Captain of T-1 and I said yes. While on the News, I was responsible for my team of 15, four Mk 56 GFCS and two Mk 5 target designation systems. My General Quarters (GQ) station was in a secondary battery plot initially as the grid spot converter for gunfire corrections and subsequently as a plotting room petty officer in charge of a gun fire control team that provided support for the Marines and sometimes for the Army. Gunfire support teams trained in Little Creek, VA so that we could respond to calls for fire and gun support quickly and with precision. We shot a combined total of 59,421 rounds of both 8” and 5” projectiles in support of our Marines including over 7,000 rounds during the Tet offensive. Truly earning her code name, “Thunder”.

I had the honor to serve onboard the "Gray Ghost" at the age of 17. I started in the deck division as a side cleaner hanging over the side in a boatswains chair and was moved to the Navigation Department as I was promised QM A school upon enlistment, but that never materialized. I found myself standing General Quarters on the bridge, learned Loran C, dead reckoning, sea and anchor detail as a Helmsman ( yes I steered the ship at 17 years old} I was on the decommissioning crew in Philadelphia Naval yard living on a barge. Great memories of the cruise to Puerto Rico, gunfire at Vieques, and our North Atlantic cruise to Amsterdam and Copenhagen. I lived onboard at Pier 7 for a year. Thank you for my becoming a man on this beautiful majestic lady! Respectfully, SM1 Lawrence Jackson
Robert ( Bob) Hester - QM3 Navigation Dept. 1968-1969
I had been stationed on the USS Franklin D Roosevelt since October 1967. In November 1968 FDR was across the pier from the Newport News which was preparing for her second Westpac cruise. It was love at first sight. The most beautiful ship I ever saw before or since. The Navy was giving early outs to reservists at the time and I could have gone home. But I asked for and was granted a transfer to Newport News only for the duration of the cruise. We were back at Norfolk in June of 1969 and I started college that fall. I’ve been blessed in my life, but serving on the USS Newport News, if only for seven months, was one of the highlights of my seventy seven years on earth.

I eventually became the barber in the officer's barber shop, a real pie job for sure! I had never held a pair of clippers in my hands but Fred Koch gave me a crash course in barbering. I had a zero liberty card so I could go ashore at liberty call and never stood a watch on Thunder! The VA just recently considered me as a victim of agent orange but I haven't heard from them yet. I enjoyed knowing a lot of sailors and am proud to have served on Thunder with them.

About this listing
Most of you are aware that the 'old' crew listing has been down for some time now and has yet to be fixed, if in fact it could ever be fixed. The database file structure is not functioning as it should and is corrupt. Therefore, our webmaster has taken on the task of re-building a list of crewmembers who are active on the internet and would like to re-connect with other crewmembers.
**Also, be sure your contact info is up to date for the USS Newport News mailing list
If you appreciate all that I do in my efforts to 'Keep The Memories Alive' click the button below and buy me a cup or two of coffee (hint). Thank you in advance!
